[ARCHIVED] 40th Avenue W. and Sheyenne Street Intersection Set to Reopen 8 a.m. Saturday

WFargo_Segment_3 Overview Map

A major milestone for the Sheyenne Street Segment Three project will be achieved this weekend. At 8 a.m. Saturday, June 15, crews will begin to remove traffic control and safety barricades to open the 40th Avenue W. and Sheyenne Street intersection to motorists.

Sheyenne Street at the 40th Avenue W. intersection has been widened to accommodate additional driving lanes and pedestrian connectivity through the intersection. Upon project completion there will be double left-turn lanes for southbound Sheyenne Street to eastbound 40th Avenue W. traffic flow. The underground facilities through the intersection were converted from rural drainage and upgraded to the city-wide storm sewer system.

At the 40th Avenue W. intersection, motorists will encounter:

  • OPEN: Two driving lanes for eastbound and west bound traffic with a dedicated left turn lane for westbound traffic
  • OPEN: Use of southbound Sheyenne Street toward 52nd Avenue roundabout
  • CLOSED: Northbound Sheyenne Street travel from 40th Avenue W.

The temporary protective pedestrian crossing at the 40th Avenue W. intersection will be removed, and pedestrians will encounter:

  • OPEN: South side intersection crossing with use of the permanent traffic signal
  • OPEN: East and west side intersection crossings with the use of the permanent traffic signal
  • CLOSED: North side intersection crossing
  • OPEN: North and south side sidewalks to the 40th Avenue W. intersection

In addition to utilizing 40th Avenue W. for eastbound traffic, motorists will also be able to use 52nd Avenue S. to Veterans Boulevard until the next phase of reconstruction work begins June 20 on the City of Fargo’s 52nd Avenue S. improvement project.

The week of June 24, additional driving lanes through the 32nd Avenue W. and Sheyenne Street intersection will reopen to drivers after median work is complete.

Public safety officials encourage all motorists to continue to allow for extra time for travel time and have patience along the detour routes. Flaggers are present at 40th Avenue W. to assist with truck traffic moving in and out of the north portion of the work zone.

On May 1 crews closed 40th Avenue W. and Sheyenne Street to drivers. The closure was necessary to keep the project work both efficient and cost effective as well as maintain safety for all using and working in the corridor.

Contractors worked extended hours and Sundays to keep on schedule with the milestone date of June 15. During the planning stages of the Sheyenne Street Segment Three and City of Fargo’s 52nd Avenue South reconstruction project, the cities worked together to coordinate construction phasing and closure timing at major intersections to keep multiple detour routes open.

With the opening of 40th Avenue W., the next phase of the City of Fargo 52nd Avenue South project will push west, and work will begin on Veterans Boulevard and 63rd Street South intersections. 52nd Avenue will be closed to through traffic at 63rd Street S with local access-maintained through Veterans Boulevard to business and residential areas.

Work in Segment three continues north of 40th Avenue W. to south of 32nd Avenue W. Crews will complete the installation of all the new underground utilities, drain title and roadway grading from 40th Avenue W. to 37th Avenue E. by the end of the weekend. Next week, weather permitting, crews will begin paving the main line of Sheyenne Street in this stretch and move north of 37th Avenue E.

The Segment Three project is expected to be complete in October.

The two-year Sheyenne Street corridor reconstruction project began in 2018 and will ease congestion and safety concerns in West Fargo by adding lanes to Sheyenne Street from 13th Avenue W. to 40th Avenues W. and reconstructing the I-94 Sheyenne Street interchange. The City of West Fargo is overseeing the project from 13th Avenue W. to 40th Avenue W. and the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is overseeing the interchange. Segment 1, completed in 2018, reconstructed a five-lane section of road from 13th Avenue W. to Beaton Drive. A six-lane section with raised median, offset turn lanes and a new bridge over the Sheyenne Diversion is currently under construction in segment 2 from Beaton Drive to 32nd Avenue W. Work on segment 3, from 32nd Avenue W. to past 40th Avenue W., began in 2019 and will result in a new four-lane section of road with a raised median and offset left-turn lanes.
